[ti: If My Name Was Whiskey (Commentary)]
[length: 04:00]
[00:00.24]This is the Carly Pearce album release special
[00:02.38]We’re talking to Carly about all the songs on the album
[00:05.45]And one, that if you listen to Sirius XM, you’ve probably heard
[00:08.59]Is “If My Name Was Whiskey”
[00:10.62]I know that they have been playing the fool out of this song
[00:13.18]And it sounds so good, and you co-wrote this song
[00:16.53]And I know at it’s core, this is about a pretty powerful subject matter
[00:20.18]That I think I heard you say fortunately, you have not personally experienced
[00:24.55]So talk to me about what inspired this song with you and busbee and Shane McAnally
[00:29.23]This was the last song to be written for the album
[00:32.87]We cut the first part of the album in February
[00:35.27]And we wrote it three days before we already had songs picked
[00:39.35]And we moved the song to the last session (wow)
[00:41.56]Because we knew this song was so special
[00:43.86]And it was actually Shane’s idea, he had the title
[00:46.75]And busbee started playing something on the keyboard
[00:50.26]And I started singing that chorus melody
[00:52.02]And it just fell out and I think that, you know
[00:54.99]I haven’t experienced what it feels like to have love for somebody who
[00:59.43]You know to be second best, to indiction or some type of vice
[01:03.75]But I think I’ve had family members that have, and friends who have
[01:08.24]And I think all of us, busbee, Shane and I all have had that
[01:11.68]And it was just really easy to, to tap into that emotion
[01:15.03]’Cause I feel like so many people deal with that
[01:16.72]Especially people who listen to country music
[01:18.35]And just the visuals in this song are really powerful, I think
[01:22.50]Well it sounds fantastic on the radio and you know
[01:24.98]I did want to say, here at Big Machine Radio, we love our friends at Sirius XM
[01:29.17]So I just wanted you to talk a minute because I mean
[01:31.42]They have been absolutely pivotal and instrumental
[01:35.53]In getting you to where you are today
[01:37.02]So just talk about your relationship with them
[01:38.61]They’ve been playing my music for three years now
[01:42.69]They’ve put out three different singles on me
[01:44.91]I’ve been a part of their “On The Horizon” show
[01:47.23]I obviously was the highway find with “Every Little Thing”
[01:50.07]But you’ll see in the liners of my album, I think J.R. Schumann
[01:53.65]And he really single-handedly is the reason that “Every Little Thing” even happened
[01:58.92]Because I let him hear a bunch of songs
[02:01.82]And had a couple of other songs in mind that were uptempo
[02:04.48]And what I thought a female needed to have as her first single (right)
[02:08.39]He made me really mad at first and picked “Every Little Thing”
[02:12.41]And gave me no time to put any kind of publicity behind it
[02:15.54]And I put it out independently
[02:17.56]And overnight, Scott Borchetta was on a flight back to Nashville
[02:21.67]To see me play at the Ryman (wow)
[02:22.89]I mean, it really did happen that fast and I remember J.R. just looking at me
[02:26.82]And saying, “Are you ready for this song to change your life?”
[02:29.39]And I rolled my eyes at him but they are forever just so special to me
[02:35.08]Because they were a part of the story long before I even really had figured out
[02:39.66]What I was and who I was, so they’re like family
[02:42.33]Isn’t it crazy because you’ve got all these young aspiring artistes
[02:46.13]Who think that maybe there’s a set path in a way
[02:48.84]That people get launched or get discovered
[02:51.17]And, and yet, here you’ve now taken advantage of something that didn’t even exist
[02:55.85]Maybe, you know, 15, 20 years ago and
[02:58.49]Yeah, it’s crazy, it’s crazy to gamble for sure because you’re letting your songs out
[03:03.48]And it’s really about sales, and he’ll tell you that before he puts it out
[03:07.73]He says, you know, “I’m gonna watch the sales really, really tightly on iTunes”
[03:13.66]”And if it’s not connecting, I can’t play it”
[03:16.40]So it’s definitely a gamble, and I’ve had songs that haven’t done very well
[03:20.17]Or haven’t, you know, they haven’t worked or connected
[03:22.88]But it was amazing for me to watch, immediately, when “Every Little Thing” came out
[03:28.31]The response to that song and just go, “Oh my gosh, this is completely about the fans
[03:33.37]And they want it” (people were feeling it)
[03:36.10]Well I, again, we love the fact that Sirius XM has allowed people to discover your music
[03:41.75]And that they’ve been so instrumental
[03:43.04]And obviously thanks to everybody who has downloaded the single
[03:46.45]Because, it’s because of that, that you’ve been able to now go on
[03:49.37]And you’ve got this album out now, which is incredible
[03:52.77]And this is the song that you’ve been hearing on Sirius XM
[03:55.74]It’s “If My Name Was Whiskey”, Carly Pearce on Big Machine Radio
[03:58.97]Year of Release: 2017
