[00:00.01]”Orion” is an instrumental by Metallica.
[00:12.68]It was the seventh track featured on their
[00:25.36]Master of Puppets album released in 1986.
[00:25.36][01:28.73][03:10.12][03:35.47][06:58.25]
[00:38.03]It was composed by Cliff Burton,
[00:50.71]James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.
[01:03.38]The title is in reference to the cosmic or
[01:16.05]space-like sounds heard during the transitional
[01:28.73]point of the song.
[01:41.40]Orion was the third instrumental Metallica
[01:54.08]recorded, the first being “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth”
[02:06.75]from Kill ‘Em All and the second being “The Call of Ktulu”
[02:19.42]from Ride the Lightning. Metallica demonstrated their
[02:32.10]progression as song writers and musicians by using
[02:44.77]multiple guitar/bass harmony parts and many stylistic
[02:57.45]changes throughout both the song and Master of Puppets
[03:10.12]as a whole (source: Encyclopedia Metallica).
[03:22.79]Orion has been covered in live acts by many other
[03:35.47]bands such as Dream Theater, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Mastodon.
[03:48.14]The song varies in tempo and melody throughout.
[04:00.82]The song fades in with a heavily distorted bass
[04:13.49]line before first the drums, and later the guitars
[04:26.16]join in with the song’s main riff. The first section
[04:38.84]of the song is very heavy sounding. It is played
[04:51.51]at a moderate tempo, and has several rhythm and
[05:04.19]time signature changes. At the 4:00 mark the song
[05:16.86]changes key, and switches to a 6/8 meter.
[05:29.53]This section is much more melodic. The melody is
[05:42.21]carried by the bass, which is usually described as
[05:54.88]Burton playing “lead bass”. This section includes the
[06:07.56]well known bass melody played throughout most of the
[06:20.23]interlude, two guitar solos, and a slightly distorted bass
[06:36.90]solo (beginning at 6:36). After the final guitar solo the
[06:45.58]piece then resolves back to one of its original, heavily
[06:58.25]disorted riffs, and then slowly fades out.
[07:10.93]The album version of the song was played at Cliff Burton’s
[07:23.60]cremation, as it was largely his composition.
[07:36.27]That is also why Metallica never played “Orion”
[07:48.95]live until 15th November 2005, in San Francisco.
[08:01.62]This song is widely considered the greatest composition
[08:14.30]of Cliff Burton’s career. It was also one of Burton’s
[08:26.97]favourite songs, second to Master of Puppets.Year of Release: 1986
